3. The calves you rear

Increase the rate of genetic gain by retaining your highest quality heifer calves to rear as replacements.

Your breeding decisions, record-keeping and management practices have a big influence on the quality of the calves you rear each season.

Rear for success

  • Milk recording helps you identify your most efficient and profitable cows to breed top quality heifer replacements from.
  • Ensure you keep the right calf. Mismothering is common as cows can swap calves. Stock bulls can also sometimes be at work unbeknownst to the farmer. Parentage verification allows you to identify the true dam and sire of your calves with confidence.
  • Minimise calf losses through the first two years with a top-rate rearing system and a robust animal health plan.
  • Grow your calves to meet liveweight targets (60% of expected mature liveweight at 15 months of age and 90% at 24 months) to optimise their lifetime reproductive performance.

Calving down high-quality, well-grown first calvers quickly and getting them back in calf early in the following mating period sets them up for long term success in the herd.
