LIC Genetics on display with Jersey win in Ecuador

At a recent cattle show high in the Andes of Ecuador in the city of Riobamba, the Jersey ring was full of strong contenders - but one cow stood out above the rest.
Puerta de Oro SofĂa, a first-calving cow, captured the attention of judges and spectators alike, ultimately taking top honours.

Bred by LIC’s distributor in Ecuador, the Duenas family, Sofía is the daughter of renowned LIC bull Kamahi King. On the day, she not only won her class but also secured the coveted Jersey dairy type award, confirming her as a standout of the show.

Interestingly, the Riobamba fair includes classes where animals can compete without formal registry, placing the focus firmly on quality and performance. It is in this setting that cows like SofĂa truly shine – judged on merit alone. What makes her achievement even more impressive is that she is only in her first lactation. During this period she reached a peak production of 28 litres per day, an early sign of the performance potential within her pedigree. Judges also praised her udder: well-balanced, strongly attached, and a defining feature as she walked around the ring.

Her success did not end with the judging. Recognised for both her quality and promise, SofĂa was sold at the show for $4,000 USD – marking her not only as a champion in the ring, but also as a valuable prospect for the future.
